The National Mandate Party’s (PAN) leaders have thrown their full support behind Hatta Radjasa for the position of party chairman due to his close relationship with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, party officials say.

Coordinator of Hatta’s supporters for the chairmanship for the 2010-2015 period, Yandri Susanto, claimed Saturday Hatta had received full support to replace the current chairman, Soetrisno Bachir from the majority of the party’s members from 33 provinces across the country.

Yandri said Hatta, who is now the coordinating economic minister, was the best candidate for the chairmanship post because of his closeness to Yudhoyono.

“Hatta has been one of the President’s closest aides. This has strengthened his candidacy for the party chairmanship,” Yandri said on Saturday on the sidelines of the party’s declaration of Hatta as a candidate for the chairman post in Batam, Riau Islands.

Yandri added that the party’s founder, Amien Rais, had expressed support for Hatta.

One hundred and fifty-seven high-ranking officials from the party’s provincial branches in Sumatra were present at the event. The officials came from Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, Jambi, Bengkulu, Lampung, South Sumatra and Bangka Belitung. In total, 334 people took part in the event.

They have the right to vote for the party chairman at the party’s third congress, which is expected to be held between Jan. 8 and 10 next year.

Candidates are expected to compete for 1,259 votes from the party’s national executive board (DPP), provincial branches executive board (DPW) and regional branches executive board (DPD) at the congress.

Hatta will face a tough battle from the party’s former legislator Drajat Wibowo, a respected economist.
“I will fight to the end,” Drajat said.

He said he had the time and energy to handle the tasks of a chairman, criticizing Hatta for not having time for the party as he was so busy with his job as chief minister of economy.

Hatta expressed his willingness to compete for the party chairmanship at the Batam meeting as a mark of respect for the members’ support.

“I will run for the chairmanship position,” Hatta said.

He added that his position as the party’s chairman would not affect his performance as the coordinating economic minister.

The party’s cofounder, AM Fatwa, said he had long recommended Hatta for chairman.

“I have been recommending Hatta for chairman since 2005, during the party’s second congress in Semarang, Central Java,” he told participants.

Influential party members, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan, Justice and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar and the party’s treasurer Asman Abnur, also expressed their support at the event.

Chairman of the party’s Riau branch, Muhammad Topan, said Hatta had become a national leader, therefore, there was no more reason to hinder his strong candidacy to become the party’s chairman.

“Hatta is the only person suitable for the chairmanship position, compared to other candidates, due to his close relations with the President,” he said.
