Social development residential affairs and Manpower affairs at Batam Island go on rapidly and in a line with the economical development of the Industrial area.
Social development pattern, residential affairs and Manpower affairs at Batam Island that take place due to the result of industrial economic development pattern oriented International one at side and oriented internally at the other side, have caused high levels of population migration from other Indonesia areas to Batam Island and manpower participation.
In 1973 through 1983 period, the total inhabitant  has rapidly   increased from about 6,000 people to 43,000 people and again increasing to 192,514 in September 1995.
The master plan or Batam Island Development Master Plan has project a total population in this area of about  700,000 people by year 2006.
Out of the total 192,415 residents (result of recording on September 1995), the number of male residents about 99,241 people and females about 93,237 people with the spreading as follows :

1. Belakang Padang District, a total of 17,297 people;
2. West Batam District, a total of 44,180 people;
3. East Batam District, a total of 131,037 people
